JAZZMAN'S STORY

Jazzman, her husband and their children (Ahmad, Damyla, and Aubrey) came to Texas with nothing but the hope of creating a better life for her family. After a few months, their housing situation fell through. With nowhere else to turn, they went to a homeless shelter. After five months of searching for resources, Jazzman was finally introduced to Jodi, a CTL Family Advocate. Jodi helped Jazzman enroll both of her daughters in the Early Childhood Education program so that she was able to work full-time, and eventually get a place of their own. Shortly after, Jazzman’s spouse lost his job, Jazzman’s car was repossessed, and she was struggling to make ends meet again.

Jodi quickly helped Jazzman create a plan, and helped get her car back. Jazzman was grateful that the teachers at CTL’s Early Childhood Education program were consistently proactive in making sure her kids had a stable, loving, and educational environment during these hard times. Today, Jazzman and her family are living in an apartment. They no longer live paycheck to paycheck and both Jazzman and her husband have worked their way up in jobs they love.

CHARLOTTE'S STORY

Charlotte became a single mom of two with a high-risk pregnancy when her partner became physically abusive and nearly caused a miscarriage. Because her abuser was threatening to find her, Charlotte was forced to move into a shelter far away from home so she and her children could stay safe together. She was able to find work, but faced the struggles of long commutes between the shelter and her new job, and taking care of her kids. After a month at the shelter, Charlotte was introduced to Clarissa, a CTL Housing Specialist and Nina, a CTL Rapid Rehousing Case Manager.

They enrolled her newborn daughter in the Early Childhood Education program and found a safe home that would symbolize a fresh start for her family. Nina made sure that the Center for Transforming Lives provided her with basic home necessities, brought groceries to her house, and got each of Charlotte’s sons their own bed. Charlotte felt like Nina and Clarissa cared about her children like they were their own. Now, she is working her way towards becoming a Department Manager at her job while planning to go to school to pursue a career in the medical field!
