As a Mental Health and Inclusion Specialist, you will support the Head Start (HS) and Early Head Start (EHS) programs within Child and Family Services, by providing support, guidance, and training in the areas of mental and behavioral health and inclusion to staff and families of children enrolled in these programs.
The Center for Transforming Lives has an immediate opening fora Mental Health and Inclusion Specialist.
The Mental Health and Inclusion Specialist will provide classroom and individual child observations as needed and provide written and oral strengths-based feedback to staff and parents. Assistance will be provided to deliver services for children with atypical behavior or development. This role will also work closely with the CTL Clinical team, Help Me Grow North Texas, Early Childhood Intervention, and the Independent School Districts to provide follow-up, referrals, and consultations.
SUMMARY
The Mental Health and Inclusion Specialist for the Center for Transforming Lives (CTL), Head Start (HS), and Early Head Start (EHS) are responsible for providing support, guidance, and training in the areas of mental and behavioral health and inclusion to the staff and families of children enrolled in Head Start and Early Head Start. The Specialist will provide classroom and individual child observations as needed and provide written and oral strengths-based feedback to staff and parents. Assistance will be provided to provide services for children with atypical behavior or development. The Mental Health and Inclusion Specialist will work closely with the CTL Clinical team, Help Me Grow North Texas, Early Childhood Intervention, and the Independent School Districts to provide follow-up, referrals, and consultations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
● Provide regular classroom observations utilizing an approved, standardized mental health/behavioral, and/or social-emotional observation tool. Provide reports on the observations and, if indicated, intervention plans.
● Provides support visits for the Home-Based program when necessary to provide support and guidance to home visitors and other HS/EHS staff.
● Assists HS/EHS management staff in the development and implementation of program practices responsive to identified behavioral and mental health concerns of an individual child or group of children, including working with staff and parents
● Attends center staffing to provide feedback on observations and/or intervention plans
● Participates in meetings with management/supervisory staff when areas needing improvement are identified
● Tracks all IEP and IFSPs and children with identified concerns and provides follow-up.
● Conducts standardized screens and assessments and formulates and writes support plans.
● Supports families by coordinating inclusion services with Part B services; attends multi-disciplinary team meetings; supports children and families through these processes
● Provides training for CTL HS/EHS program staff and childcare staff
● Provides training at Parent Committee meetings to help parents better understand mental health issues, helping to strengthen supportive environments and relationships in the home, and helping to guide appropriate responses to the child’s behavior and leads and facilitates provider training and/or parent education groups.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
● Bachelor’s degree in psychology, Social Work, or related field.
● At least two years of experience providing mental health and inclusion services.
● Expertise in serving young children (6 weeks – 36 months) and their families.
● Preferred experience in Head Start or Early Head Start program.
● Preferred bilingual, with oral and written skills in Spanish and English.

● Knowledge and ability to support all children with special needs
● Use results of observations, screens, and assessments to guide work with families and childcare staff, set goals, and develop individualized plans
● Track and follow up on all children with potential developmental and social-emotional concerns
